River Gallery began as an informal group of artists living in the West River area who came together to share knowledge, inspiration and support. This developed into a network of producing artists. In time, they wished to present themselves and their work to the community; thus the first annual West River Artists Spring Exhibit was held in Galesville, May 1986. Subsequently, the group held a Winter Show at The Gallery, in Shadyside, and a second annual Spring Exhibit in June 1987.

The success of these shows suggested the establishment of a permanent location. River Gallery opened first in Galesville across from Steamboat Landing Restaurant in 1987. The gallery relocated to the Main Street location in 1989. It is now jointly owned by Roxanne Weidele, Elsie Whitman, and Laura Dixon.
